I wanna know...

Have you ever seen the rain - comin' down - on a suuunny day?

Cause that's what I saw when I was out just a little while ago, wogging. 2.6 miles. Pretty good seeing as I haven't done anything since Wednesday!

I have been reading Of Human Bondage by Maugham and am almost done. Pretty good. It is a bit drawn out, but it is kind of like life like that. You keep making the same mistakes and learning the same lessons until you learn them. I'd recommend it if you are in the mood for a long period novel.

Ok, kiddoes, I have some people to get back to, but stay tuned!

Root Canal

I had a root canal done on Thursday - it was long overdue, so it is a relief to have begun the process. But not really... fun.

I guess I am just boring today - I talked to a few people today - a good long talk with Kari-Ann, which was nice - she just got a great job - Yay! Got some housework done. Like I said, boring.

I'm not in the writing mood, I suppose. Sigh. I will write more later in the week...

Extreme Makeover; Home Edition

So, today I went to church for the first time in a while (not for any good reason except busyness and work, etc) and we had a baptism, which is always special. Also, we learned that next Sunday GPC (Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church) might make a cameo appearance on Extreme Makeover; Home Edition. A house was built for a woman who is the caretaker for a LOT of kids, and she is friends with a bunch of GPC members. So GPC hosted a Gospel concert to raise money for the family. They aren't sure if GPC will show up in the episode, but I think it will be pretty cool, regardless. So watch EMHE next week!

It was really great to be in church this morning - I find the services so... centering. I love the hymns and the lovely, nice people. It is so nice to just go somewhere I know I will be welcomed even if I don't know anyone personally. What a relief from the rest of the week, dealing with all the callous city folk. I forgot how much I need that time set aside to reflect on the rest of my week and remember the important things in my life. My life will still be busy for the next couple of months, but I hope I will be able to get to church more often, and possibly some Adult Ed classes that I miss so much from Westminster.

I haven't wogged all that much this week - 2.5 to 3 miles Wed, 1.5 Thurs, and a short walk on Fri at lunch with Lisa. Nothing yesterday or today, I wasn't feeling like it, but I will hop right back on the horse tomorrow!

Friday, we had a happy hour at Franklin's. It was really fun! Good call, Clare.

I am looking forward to a Costco trip tomorrow - it has been so long I am in Costco withdrawal. I need Diet Pepsi and gas - woo hoo! Hope you all had a good weekend, don't forget to keep commenting!

The Berkeley Report: Another One (or Two) Bites the Dust

From the moment I touched down in San Jose, my extended weekend was a whirl of slinging AV equipment, trying to remember way too many Kentuckians' names, and spending time with one of my best friends while she was preparing to join herself to a man for the rest of her life.

Most of the weddings I have been in or to I have spoken to the bride for about 10 minutes at the reception. But I was super spoiled to spend lots of time with Chanda, almost 2 whole days! Thursday night I spent with Chanda's family in San Mateo, they have the most beautiful view I have ever seen outside of the observation deck at Rockefeller Center. Of course, Eric and Chanda's parents were there. I saw Liz with her two kiddies and met Debbie again with her 3 - these are 5 of the most precious little ones I have laid eyes on. John-Mark came in from Boston, too. Friday, we picked up AV equipment, went up to Napa for a wine tasting (I only had a few sips as I was DD for the way home - I wanted to buy some wine, but it was too much of a hassle). Then back to the hotel to change and out again for a bit of food and drink at Jupiter's in Berkeley with the girls. We met up with the boys and partied til 2. Then a sleepover with Chanda!

Saturday, we got a bagel and one of the best lattes I have had in a long time at The French Hotel. I dropped Chanda off at the Nail Salon, ran back to the hotel because I forgot Chanda's shower card, then back to the Salon - where I had my first pedicure ever! Manicure, too - French on both - if you only get it done once every 29 years, you might as well go all out! They did a really good job and we had a really good time. Then we ran over to Whole Foods to grab some fruit, drinks, and ice, back to the hotel to change - Sheila made it out of Louisiana in the hurricane! - got to the church not too late, rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, cleaned up, back to the hotel. Sheila and I were not quite ready for bed, so we caught The Women across the street. I liked it, mixed reviews from Sheila. We talked til we fell asleep. It was really great that she could make it, it was pretty amazing that she got there!

On Sunday, we had a lot of chores, not the least of which was for me to write a toast that I didn't know I had to deliver until the afternoon before. I dreamt of it overnight, and woke up before Sheila and got it mostly out on paper right away.

Yes, I cried at the wedding, as ALWAYS. By this point, I have become savvy enough to wrap several tissues around the bouquet and go light on the eye makeup. The ceremony was at a Presbyterian church, which was extra special for me, even with the more progressive version of the Lord's prayer. Chanda was courageous, graceful, and radiant. I managed to make it all the way down the somewhat steeply inclined aisle in new heels without showing my knickers, much to Chanda's father's relief.

Then we were shepherded up into the hills around Berkeley (OK, less hill than vertical slope). The Brazil Room in Tilden Park was very beautiful, the perfect venue. We took some pics while a great, grizzly blues duo performed, I helped set up the AV equipment a bit, and the bridal party was formally introduced by Amy and Co, who were awesome.

Then, Surprise!, we are going to do the speeches *before* dinner, and can you do it right away? Sure! Thankfully, Bob, the best man and Chanda's new double brother-in-law (Eric's sister's husband), went first. Apparently, Eric had seen fit to warn him many months in advance that he would be called upon to reflect on Chanda and Eric and love in general. I didn't really hear most of it because my heart was beating too hard to hear anything else. I did catch something about Basho and haiku and birds and flowers, but mostly I understood that he had spent a lot of time preparing an eloquent ode to said couple while I had a hastily scribbled half-dream written on the back of an extra sheet of printer paper from the hotel. The first thing I said was that I didn't have any haiku. Then my hand started shaking and I was trying to hold the mike with one hand and my champagne and paper with the other without pouring my champagne all over the floor. Luckily, I had already downed most of it during the first toast! I got a couple of impressive laughs, didn't lose my composure to the point of muteness, and got through to the end without accusing the best man of attitude instead of gratitude. Chanda and Eric seemed to be touched and I got lots of generous compliments, so I was satisfied. Then it was time for dinner and dancing (I got to dance with Chanda's father!, but not her nephew (sniff)). All too soon, it was time to start cleaning up, Chanda and Eric were hurried out to their surprise limo, Sheila and I caught a ride in the big van with Mr. Krebbs (my new hero!). Sheila still had to get her ticket back to L.A., then we collapsed exhausted but happy on the loverly clean sheets of the Courtyard by Marriott.

Stay tuned for pics and a writeup of my toast at a future date...

A very warm congratulations to Kirsten, who also got married this weekend in MN to Chris Chesla! I have peeked at a couple of pics on facebook of the happy occasion, so if you are facebook friends with her, take a gander over there or send a card or email. I can't wait to see more pics and hear more about it - if you were there, tell me, tell me! I wish I had Hermione Granger's neat trick to be in two places at once.

I was wiped today, and was just about asleep before, but I wanted to get most of this down while it was fresh in my memory. I haven't walked or wogged since last Wed and couldn't bear it today, but I am back to it tomorrow, as Clare and I plan to hit the dirt again.

Just a quick note - I currently have my comments set to be moderated before being posted, so if you comment (please, comment!), don't worry if it doesn't show up right away. I will get to it ASAP.

Congrats to Kirsten and Chris, Chanda and Eric! May you have lots of happiness, love, and laughter!

Prep for CA

I've been pretty busy trying to get my act together for Chanda's wedding. So not much to say tonight. I went for a nice long walk/run on Sunday - 4.5 miles. But then yesterday and today just my normal lunchtime walk with Lisa - today was extra short due to the rain - not much, but enough to chase us inside.

I had a good weekend, despite having to drive all the way to Goddard in the hurricane. I am not going to bring my computer, but I will try to send in an update from the other side sometime over the weekend, although we are pretty solidly booked.

Have a nice one!

Lunch at Jasper's

Today, we had lunch at Jasper's.

"Bourgie" -Robin

"That got worse and worse with every bite." -Shaun

"Don't criticize before the food comes - that's how you end up with nasties in your soup." -me

Actually, it wasn't bad - especially when you consider that there were 12 of us. I just thought it was funny to record some of the things that could be overheard. It was really nice, we saw pics of John's wedding, met the two new women (welcome Vanessa and Jenny), and caught up on everyone's summer.

We are interviewing to fill Roy's position - so if you know anyone with a vaguely scientific background, let me know! Referral bonuses are up to 1000$!

Clare and I went for a run/walk (more walk than run) in Sligo Creek Park yesterday - then shoe shopping! I got great shoes for Chanda's wedding. I have been trying to make some plans for the wine tasting, but we have a big group and it is getting kinda late to be making reservations. Sigh.

Kirsten is also getting married next weekend - I wish I could go to both! I really miss MN - I didn't get to do much in the Cities when I was there in June. Between the RNC in the news and Clare's trip there and talking to Kari-Ann, I really miss it!

Congrats to Jennie B on graduating recently! Shout out to my faithful readers and commenters - Clare, Mel, and my mom...

Day of Labour

Is it ironic that Labor Day is a day that everyone gets off? I suppose it is the way that we honor laborers? Oh well, it is fun to have a day off at the end of the summer. The only down side is the increased traffic with all the kiddies back in school.

I forgot to mention a very important event that occurred while I was in Utah. I won an iPod shuffle! I NEVER win anything! And it was by far the coolest prize - the other ones were walkie-talkies, and something else I don't remember. Isn't that cool! Woo-hoo! Go Calcon! I don't know what I am going to do with it yet. Probably save it for a present, then by the time I have an opportunity to use it, it will be obsolete.

I haven't done much this weekend. Worked in the mornings. Sat and today, I went for a "wog". That is my generous description of my imitation jogging (walking & running). Clare and I are planning on trying a 5K in November, so I am starting to "train". I did it once or twice before, one time more successfully than the other. Basically, my only goal is to run the whole thing and finish. Then we might do another in spring, so maybe I will up my goal at that time. So, on Sat. I did pretty well for not really doing it in a while. I wogged almost the whole 1.1 mile trail (about .9-1 miles). I'm nowhere near the 11 minute mile, but I felt pretty good, you know, for me, anyway.

I made a bit of progress in the wine tasting tour for Chanda's wedding. Hopefully, we will firm up the plans soon... exciting!

So, that is my big news for the weekend. Back to the office tomorrow. It has been a while, I don't even remember what all I have to do!
